In 2025, Ride Joburg opened the doors to cycling for 1,000 riders through the Hitch a Free Ride campaign. The incredible response inspired us to go even bigger in 2026 by doubling the initiative to 2,000 Free Ride entries, giving even more people the opportunity to be part of this iconic event.

Cycling is more than just a sport. For many South Africans, it is transport, opportunity, freedom, health, and connection. It builds communities, creates pathways, and changes lives.

As one of the country’s most iconic cycling road races, Ride Joburg is committed to growing a field that truly reflects the diversity and spirit of our nation. The Hitch a Free Ride initiative exists to break down financial obstacles and expand access to the sport, particularly for riders from underrepresented communities. Our goal is simple: to help create a more inclusive and representative cycling culture in South Africa.

If you genuinely cannot afford an entry to the 2026 Ride Joburg 97km Road Race and meet the application criteria (as outlined in the T’s & C’s within the Howler application form), we encourage you to apply.In 2026, we once again open the streets, and the opportunity, to more riders than ever before.
